Lillian F. Schwartz

File:DaVinci MonaLisa1b.jpg
Mona Leo

Denotations: The Mona Lisa is the female in the big picture. She has long, wavy, dark hair and a lack of eyebrows. Her lip seems to be upturned slightly. The right side of her face (our left) is covered by a portion of a picture. The man in this picture is Leonardo Da Vinci.

Connotations: Lillian is trying to show the similarities between the Mona Lisa and it's creator, Da Vinci. The way she has placed the pictures; the mouth, the eyes, the nose, and even the hair lines match up perfectly. It is as if Mona Lisa is Da Vinci himself. Of course as a women and years younger. Scholars are led to believe Da Vinci painted this as himself in drag. This could be evidence of his homosexuality.

Night Scene

Denotations: The main color focus in this piece is black and white. There is a some star type object in the middle top section of the picture. It stands above the rest of the items in the picture. The images within the picture are created by the use of different lines and dots.

Connotations: This picture shows a city full of buildings in the night. The use of lines and dots produce the buildings. This simple idea of using those lines, creates dimension and complexity in the picture. The white used makes the buildings looked illuminated, which goes with  the Night Scene theme. The object in the middle top of the picture is a star that stands high in the sky above the city.
